Equivalent resistor are total value of all the resistors. Resistor can be basically connected by two ways:
  1. In series
  2. In parallel

Equivalent Series resistance is given by

R = R1 + R2 + R3 + ..... + Rn
Equivalent parallel resistance is given by
$\frac{1}{R}$ = $\frac{1}{R_{1}}$ + $\frac{1}{R_{2}}$ +......+ $\frac{1}{R_{n}}$.
Where R1, R2, ....Rn are resistors.

Using the formula


Equivalent Series resistance is given by                            
               R = R1 + R2 + R3 + ..... + Rn

Equivalent parallel resistance is given by
$\frac{1}{R}$ = $\frac{1}{R_{1}}$ + $\frac{1}{R_{2}}$ +......+ $\frac{1}{R_{n}}$.
where R1, R2, ....Rn are resistors.

  1. Two resitors of 2$\Omega$ and 6$\Omega$ are connected in series. Calculate its equivalent resistance.


    Step 1 :  

    Given: R1 = 2 $\Omega$,


    R2 = 6 $\Omega$



    Step 2 :  

    Equivalent resistance R = R1 + R2


                                     = 2 $\Omega$ + 6 $\Omega$



    Answer  :  

    R = 8 $\Omega$



  2. Calculate equivalent parallel resistance for given two resistors:

    2 $\Omega$, 3 $\Omega$


    Step 1 :  

    given R1 = 2 $\Omega$,


    R2 = 3 $\Omega$



    Step 2 :  

    R = $\frac{1}{R_{1}}$ + $\frac{1}{R_{2}}$


     = $\frac{1}{2}$ + $\frac{1}{3}$



    Answer  :  

    Equivalent Resistance R = 0.833$\Omega$
