Line of Best Fit Calculator
Top
The line of best fit drawn on a scatter diagram gives a clearer idea of the correlation between two sets of data.

The line of best fit is drawn to show the trend of the plotted points. The line should have an equal number of points on each side. To draw a line of best fit, draw a line on the scatter diagram which shows the trend of the plotted points and has roughly an equal number of points on each side.

You can see a calculator with two different sets of data given below. On clicking "Calculate Line of Best Fit", a graph is plotted by marking those two sets of points. A line is drawn which gives you the line of best fit.

Steps for Line of Best Fit Calculator

Back to Top
Step 1 :

Select suitable scales for the x-axis and the y-axis so that the points can be plotted more accurately and the graph produced is large enough.

Step 2 :

Mark the points correctly.

Step 3 :

Use a long and transparent ruler to draw the line of best fit.

  1. The voltage V across an electrical component and the current I , flowing through the component are related by a linear law. A set of experimental values of I and V are recorded in the table below.

    I(A) 0.3 0.5 0.7 0.9 1.1
    V(V) 1.08 1.70 2.52 3.32 3.96

    Plot a graph of V against I and draw a line of best fit.

    Step 1 :

    Given table

    I(A) = 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9, 1.1

    V(V) = 1.08, 1.70, 2.52, 3.32, 3.96

    Step 2 :

    Lets plot the V-values in y-axis and I-values in x-axis.

    Step 3 :

    The graph of V against I is shown below.

    Answer  :

  2. x 1.0 2.4 4.0 6.2 9.0 12.4
    y 5.0 7.6 12.1 15.5 21.0 26.2

    The table above shows the experimental values of two variables x and y. Plot a graph of y against x and draw a line of best fit.

    Step 1 :

    Given table

    x = 1.0, 2.4, 4.0, 6.2, 9.0, 12.4

    y = 5.0, 7.6, 12.1, 15.5, 21.0, 26.2

    Step 2 :

    Lets plot the x-values in x-axis and y-values in y-axis.

    Step 3 :

    The graph of V against I is shown below.

    Answer  :

    The graph of V against I is shown below.
