Equivalent weight is the weight of an element or a compound which combines with or displaces 1.008 part by weight of H2 or 8 part by weight of O2 or 35.5 part by weight of Cl2. Equivalent weight is the number and when it is denoted in grams it is called gram equivalent. It depends upon the nature of chemical reaction in which substance takes part.

The weight of an unknown metal is calculated by knowing the equivalent weight of another metal by using displacement method.

$Equivalent\ weight\ of\ metal\ A = \frac{Equivalent\ weight\ of\ metal\ B \times Weight\ of\ metal\ A}{Weight\ of\ metal\ B}$

## Steps for Metal Weight Calculator

Step 1 :

Read the problem carefully and list out the values given.

Step 2 :

Substitute the given values in the formula to find out the unknown value.

$Equivalent\ weight\ of\ metal\ A = \frac{Equivalent\ weight\ of\ metal\ B \times Weight\ of\ metal\ A}{Weight\ of\ metal\ B}$

## Problems on Metal Weight Calculator

1. ### 7.5kgm of iron displaced 7.95kgm of copper from CuSO4 solution. If the equivalent weight of iron is 28, calculate the equivalent weight of copper

Step 1 :

Given data

Weight of iron = 7.5kgm

Weight of copper = 7.95kgm

Equivalent weight of iron = 28

Equivalent weight of copper = ?

Step 2 :

Substitute the values in the formula to find out the unknown equivalent weight of the metal.

$Equivalent\ weight\ of\ metal\ A = \frac{28 \times 7.5}{7.95}$

Equivalent weight of metal A (copper) = 26.41

The equivalent weight of the unknown metal (copper) is 26.41

2. ### 5.8454gm of NaCl was dissolved in water and treated with silver nitrate solution whereby 14.8457gm AgCl was obtained. If the equivalent weight of Ag is 108, calculate the equivalent weight of sodium.

Step 1 :

Given data

Weight of NaCl = 5.8454gm = 0.005845kgm

Weight of AgNO3 = 14.8457gm = 0.0148457kgm

Equivalent weight of Ag = 108

Equivalent weight of sodium = ?

Step 2 :

Substitute all the values in the formula to obtain the unknown value.

$Equivalent\ weight\ of\ metal\ A = \frac{108 \times 0.0148457}{0.005845}$

Equivalent weight of metal A (sodium) = 274.30
