  1. Calculte the mole fractions of methanol CH3OH and water in a solution made by dissolving 4.5g of alcohol in 40g of H2OM of H2O = 18M of CH3OH = 32.


    Step 1 :  

    Moles of CH3OH = $\frac{4.5g}{32.0g/mole}$ = 0.14 mole

    Moles of H2O = $\frac{40g}{0.18g/mole}$ = 2.2 mole



    Step 2 :  

    Mole fraction of CH3OH = $\frac{0.14}{0.14+2.2}$


    Mole fraction of CH3OH =0.061



    Answer  :  

    The mole fraction of the given solution is 0.061



  2. What is the mole fraction of solute in a solution prepared by dissolving 98g H2SO4 (M98) in 162g H2O (M18)?


    Step 1 :  

    Moles of H2SO4 = $\frac{98}{98g/mole}$ = 1 mole

    Moles of H2O = $\frac{162g}{18g/mole}$ = 9 mole



    Step 2 :  

    Mole fraction of H2SO4 = $\frac{1}{1+9}$


    Mole fraction of H2SO4 = 0.1



    Answer  :  

    Mole fraction of the given solute H2SO4 is 0.1
