The Dot Product (or Scalar Product) of two vectors is calculated as sum of the products of one vector in one direction and multiplying it with the magnitude component of other vector in same direction for each direction (where vectors have components).
Easier way to look understand it is through this example -
Let us say there are two vectors 'x' and 'y' , with vector 'x' = a i + b j + c k & vector 'y' = d i + e j + f k, then the dot product of these vectors (x .y) will be (a.d + b.e + c.f), which is sum of the product of magnitude of the vectors in each direction.
