Complex numbers can be added easily by adding the real parts together and then adding the imaginary parts together. This is similar to combining like terms with variables.

A complex number in standard form is defined as 

a + bi

Where a and b are real numbers and i is the imaginary unit. We call "a" the real part of the complex number and "b" the imaginary part of the complex number.

Step 1 :  

Take the real parts and the imaginary parts separately.



Step 2 :  

Then find the real part of the number, by adding 2 real part .



Step 3 :  

Then find the imaginary part of the number, by adding 2 imaginary part.

  1. Adding complex numbers.

    Example: (3+2i) + (1+4i)


    Step 1 :  

    Real parts


    3, 1


    Imaginary parts


    2i, 4i



    Step 2 :  

    Real part = 3 + 1 = 4



    Step 3 :  

    Imaginary part = 2i + 4i = 6i



    Answer  :  

    The answer is 4 + 6i



  2. Additing complex numbers: (5 + 3i) + (7 + 2i)


    Step 1 :  

    Real parts 


    5, 7


    Imaginary parts


    3i, 2i



    Step 2 :  

    Real parts = 5 + 7 = 12



    Step 3 :  

    Imaginary parts = 3i + 2i = 5i



    Answer  :  

    The answer is 12 + 5i
