Steps for Equivalent Fractions

Back to Top
Step 1 :

Read the problem and go through the given two fractions.

Step 2 :

Simplify the given fraction to its lowest form. In its lowest reduced form if the two given fractions are equal they are equivalent else they are not.

Example problems on Equivalent Fractions

  1. Check whether the fractions $\frac{2}{5}$ and $\frac{8}{20}$ are equivalent?

    Step 1 :

    The given fractions are p = $\frac{2}{5}$ and q = $\frac{8}{20}$

    Step 2 :

    Simplify the fraction to its lowest form
    p = $\frac{2}{5}$ and

    q = $\frac{8}{20}$ = $\frac{2}{5}$

    Hence p = q and two fractions are equivalent

    Answer  :

    $\therefore$ $\frac{2}{5}$ and $\frac{8}{20}$ are equivalent.

  2. Are the fractions $\frac{3}{8}$ and $\frac{9}{15}$ equivalent?

    Step 1 :

    The given fractions are p = $\frac{3}{8}$ and q = $\frac{9}{15}$

    Step 2 :

    Simplify the fraction to its lowest form
    p = $\frac{3}{8}$ and

    q = $\frac{9}{15}$ = $\frac{3}{5}$

    p $\neq$ q
    Hence the two fractions are not equivalent.

    Answer  :

    $\therefore$ $\frac{3}{8}$ and $\frac{9}{15}$ are not equivalent to each other.
