Rational or Irrational Calculator
Top

Rational or Irrational Calculator (or Rational Numbers Calculator or Irrational Number Calculator or Surd Calculator) is an online tool to calculate whether root (nth root) of a number is rational or irrational (surd). If any number is given then it can easily calculate whether given number is rational or irrational. For any number of the form a1/x (= $\sqrt[x]{a}$), the value of a and x have to be entered in the calculator, and on clicking solve, it will tell whether the expression a1/x is rational or irrational.

'Surd' and 'Irrational' means the same.

Step by Step Calculation

Step 1 :

Take down the expression and check whether the expression is of the form a1/x.

Step 2 :

Check whether its a rational or irrational number

  • If the given root is expressed as fraction it is a rational number

  • If the given root cannot be simplified further it is a irrational number.

Example Problems

  1. Check whether $\sqrt{3}$ is rational or irrational?

    Step 1 :

    Given number is $\sqrt{3}$

    Step 2 :

$\sqrt{3}$ cannot be simplified further or expressed as fraction. Hence it is a irrational number (surd).

    Answer  :

    $\sqrt{3}$ is irrational.

  2. Check whether 6251/4 is rational or irrational?

    Step 1 :

    Given number is 6251/4

    Step 2 :

    6251/4 = (6251/2)1/2

              = ($\sqrt{625}$)1/2

              = (25)1/2

              = $\sqrt{25}$

              = 5

    Answer  :

    6251/4= 5.
