Percentage composition implies percentage by mass of each element present in the given compound.
Percentage Composition Calculator calculates the the composition of specific element in the given compound which is expressed in percentage.

Below is given a default chemical formula, click "Calculate Percent Composition" to find the percentage composition of specific element in the given compound.

## Steps for Percent Composition Calculator

Step 1 :

Read the problem and from periodic table note the atomic mass of the given elements then find the molecular weight of the given compound.

Step 2 :

Now select any particular element for which percentage composition has to be found.

Use the formula:
Percentage Composition = $\frac{Mass\ of\ a\ particular\ element}{Molecular\ mass}$ $\times$ 100 %.

Substitute the values of that particular element and get the answer.

## Problems on Percent Composition Calculator

1. ### Calculate the Percentage composition of carbon in glucose.

Step 1 :

The Chemical formula for glucose is C6 H12 O6. Given elements are C,H,O.

Atomic mass of Carbon C = 12.0107 amu, Hydrogen H = 1.00794 amu and Oxygen O = 16 amu.

Molecular weight = 6 $\times$ 12.0107 + 12 $\times$ 1.00794 + 6 $\times$ 16
= 72.0642 + 12.09528 + 96
= 180.159 amu.

Step 2 :

Mass of Carbon in Glucose = C6 = 6 $\times$ 12.0107 = 72.0642 amu.

Percentage composition of Carbon in Glucose is given as:
Percentage Composition = $\frac{Mass\ of\ a\ particular\ element}{Molecular\ mass}$ $\times$ 100 %
= $\frac{72.0642}{180.159}$ $\times$ 100%
= 40 %.

The Percentage Composition of Carbon in glucose is 40%.

2. ### Calculate the Percentage composition of chlorine in Carbon tetrachloride:

Step 1 :

The Chemical formula for carbon tetra chloride is CCl4. Given are the elements C,Cl.

Atomic mass of Carbon C = 12.0107 amu and Chlorine Cl = 35.453 amu.

Molecular weight = 12.0107 + 4 $\times$ 35.453
= 153.8227 amu.

Step 2 :

Mass of the Cl in CCl4 = 4 $\times$ 35.453 = 141.812 amu
Percentage composition of Chlorine in Carbon tetrachloride is given as:
Percentage Composition = $\frac{Mass\ of\ a\ particular\ element}{Molecular\ mass}$ $\times$ 100 %
= $\frac{141.842}{153.8227}$ $\times$ 100%
= 92.19 %.
