Redox Reaction Calculator
Top
Redox reactions form a large class of chemical reactions in which the reactants can be atoms, ions or molecules. In a redox reaction one substance is oxidized and another reduced.

Substance such as elemental oxygen or chlorine which tend to gain electrons easily are called oxidizing agents. Similarly substances like elemental sodium and potassium which tend to lose electrons easily are called reducing agents.

The formula for redox reaction potential is given below.

$E = E^{o} - \frac{RT}{nF} lnQ$
Where
• Eo is the standard potential
• R is gas constant
• F is Faraday constant
• n is number of electrons transferred
• Q = $\frac{C^{c}D^{d}}{A^{a}B^{b}}$
Where uppercase letters are the concentrations ad the lowercase letters are the stoichiometric coefficient for the reaction.

Step 1 :

Read the problem and list out the given values.

Step 2 :

Substitute all the values in the corresponding formula to get the E value.

$E = E^{o} - \frac{RT}{nF} lnQ$

1. ### Calculate the value of E for the formation of tin chloride in which the Eo value is 0.285 and the transfer of electrons is 2 and the Q value is 71.25 at 290K.

Step 1 :

Given data

Eo = 0.285

n = 2

Q = 71.25

T = 290K

Step 2 :

Substitute all the value in the corresponding formula.

$E = E^{o} - \frac{RT}{nF} lnQ$

$E = 0.285 - \frac{8.314 \times 290}{2 \times 9.648 \times 10^{4}} ln71.25$

E = 0.232

Answer  :

The answer is E = 0.232

2. ### For the formation of Ferrous chloride the Eo value is 0.364 and the number of electrons transferred is 3 and the Q value is 26.48 at 284K. Calculate the value for E.

Step 1 :

Given data

Eo = 0.364

n = 3

Q = 26.48

T = 284K

Step 2 :

Substitute all the values in the corresponding formula.

$E = E^{o} - \frac{RT}{nF} lnQ$

$E = 0.364 - \frac{8.314 \times 284}{3 \times 9.648 \times 10^{4}} ln26.48$

E = 0.337

Answer  :

The answer is 0.337
